The battery may not be the most glamorous part of a vape setup, but it's one of the most important. It stores and supplies the electrical energy required to heat the coil, and the type of battery or mod you choose determines everything from available power and device size to how the hardware is charged.

Our mods and batteries category covers several quite different types of product rather than one universal battery format.

You'll find slim batteries designed for traditional vape pens, standalone regulated mods for use with compatible tanks, and removable lithium-ion cells designed for devices that require external batteries. The current range spans capacities from compact 650mAh pen batteries through to larger integrated mods and 4200mAh removable 21700 cells.

That variety makes compatibility particularly important. Before ordering, it's worth identifying exactly what your device requires rather than choosing a battery based solely on capacity or physical appearance.

What Types of Vape Batteries Are Available?

There are three broad groups within this category:

Each serves the same basic purpose – providing electrical power – but they aren't interchangeable.

A standalone 18650 cell, for example, cannot simply replace a complete pen-style battery. Likewise, an integrated box mod already contains its own rechargeable battery and normally doesn't require a separate removable cell.

What Is a Vape Mod?

A vape mod is the main power and control section of a modular vape device.

Unlike a complete vape kit, a standalone mod is generally sold without the tank. You can attach a compatible vape tank separately, giving you more freedom over the combination of hardware you use.

Modern regulated mods can provide features such as:

• Adjustable wattage
• Battery level displays
• Digital screens
• Variable power settings
• Multiple operating modes
• Built-in rechargeable batteries
• Replaceable battery compatibility
• 510 tank connections

The amount of adjustment varies enormously from one model to another.

Our current collection ranges from compact devices such as the Eleaf Mini iStick 10W through to 80W models including the Eleaf iStick T80, Aspire Zelos M80 and SMOK X-Priv Solo.

Built-In Battery Vape Mods

Many vape mods contain a rechargeable battery permanently installed inside the device.

These are sometimes referred to as internal battery mods or integrated battery mods.

Charging is straightforward because there's no battery cell to remove. You recharge the mod through its supported charging connection and continue using the same internal battery throughout the usable life of the device.

Examples currently within our range include:

These models illustrate just how much battery capacity can vary even among integrated devices.

A smaller-capacity mod will generally be easier to keep compact, while larger batteries provide more stored electrical charge. Actual runtime will still depend heavily on the wattage, coil and frequency of use.

Mods With Replaceable Batteries

Other vape mods don't contain a permanent battery at all. Instead, they accept one or more removable rechargeable cells.

Common formats include:

• 18650 batteries
• 21700 batteries
• Other device-specific rechargeable cells

For example, the current SMOK X-Priv Solo uses an 18650 battery, while the Innokin Kroma-R also uses an 18650 cell.

The advantage of a removable system is that the battery itself can be replaced independently of the mod.

When one cell runs low, a compatible charged battery can be installed instead. The cell can also be replaced when it eventually reaches the end of its usable life without automatically requiring replacement of the entire mod.

The important part is choosing the correct battery specification. Physical size alone isn't enough.

18650 Vape Batteries

The 18650 battery is one of the most established removable battery formats used in vape mods.

The name describes the approximate dimensions of the cylindrical cell: around 18mm in diameter and 65mm in length.

18650 batteries are available with different capacities and discharge capabilities, so two cells of the same physical size aren't necessarily suitable for the same application.

Our current collection includes the Vapcell K25 18650, which has a listed capacity of 2500mAh and a 20A continuous discharge rating.

When replacing an 18650 battery, you should therefore check more than just the number printed on the size.

Important specifications can include:

• Cell size
• Capacity in mAh
• Continuous discharge rating
• Manufacturer
• Device requirements
• Number of batteries required

Always follow the specifications given by the manufacturer of your vape mod.

21700 Vape Batteries

21700 batteries are physically larger rechargeable cells used by some modern vape mods and other high-drain devices.

Their larger dimensions allow manufacturers to offer different combinations of battery capacity and discharge capability compared with traditional 18650 cells.

Our current range includes the Vapcell INR21700, which is rated at 4200mAh.

A 21700 battery should only be used in a device specifically designed to accept it.

Don't assume that an 18650 and 21700 cell are interchangeable simply because they're both cylindrical rechargeable batteries.

Specialist Replaceable Vape Batteries

Not every replaceable battery used in vape hardware is an 18650 or 21700.

Some devices use less common cell formats designed around their particular size and power requirements. Our current range, for example, includes IMORE 16500 high-drain batteries intended as replacement cells for compatible San Dynasty devices.

This is another reason why checking the exact battery requirement matters.

If your device specifies a particular cell type, replace it with a suitable battery of that specification rather than attempting to substitute something that merely looks similar.

Pen Style Vape Batteries

At the simpler end of the category are pen-style vape batteries.

These combine the rechargeable battery and outer device body into one slim cylindrical unit. Instead of inserting a separate battery cell, you attach a compatible tank or clearomiser directly to the top of the battery.

Our current range includes several KangerTech EVOD batteries, covering 650mAh and 1000mAh fixed-output models alongside variable-voltage EVOD batteries with capacities up to 1600mAh.

They're primarily suited to traditional, relatively low-powered vape hardware rather than modern high-wattage sub-ohm tanks.

Fixed vs Adjustable Vape Batteries

Another useful distinction is how much control the battery gives you over its output.

Fixed-Output Batteries

Some simpler batteries deliver a predetermined voltage or power level.

There's very little to configure. Attach the appropriate hardware and the battery handles its output according to its design.

These tend to be found among traditional vape pen batteries and simpler devices.

Variable-Voltage Batteries

Variable-voltage batteries allow you to adjust the voltage being supplied to the coil.

The KangerTech EVOD VV batteries in our current range are examples of this style of device.

They provide some control over output while retaining a relatively straightforward pen-shaped format.

Adjustable-Wattage Mods

More advanced regulated mods usually allow you to adjust wattage directly.

This gives you much finer control over the amount of electrical power delivered to the coil and makes it easier to match the output of the mod to the recommended wattage range of a compatible coil.

Understanding Vape Battery Capacity

Battery capacity is usually given in mAh, meaning milliamp hours.

This figure represents electrical charge capacity. In general terms, a battery with a higher mAh rating can store more charge than one with a lower rating.

It doesn't tell you exactly how long the device will last between charges.

Battery runtime is affected by:

• Wattage
• Coil resistance
• Battery capacity
• Frequency of use
• Length of each draw
• Device efficiency
• Battery age and condition

A 3000mAh device used at relatively high wattage can potentially need charging sooner than a smaller battery being used at much lower power.

For that reason, mAh is useful for comparison, but it shouldn't be treated as a direct measurement of hours of use.

What Does Battery Discharge Rating Mean?

Removable high-drain batteries also have a discharge rating, normally expressed in amps.

This refers to the amount of current the cell is designed to deliver within its specification.

That's important because vape mods can place substantial electrical demands on their batteries, particularly at higher power levels.

When choosing an external battery, both capacity and discharge capability need to be appropriate for the intended device.

A high mAh figure shouldn't be considered the only indication of whether a battery is suitable.

Vape Battery Capacity vs Discharge Capability

This distinction becomes particularly important when buying removable cells.

Choosing the battery with the largest capacity isn't necessarily the correct choice if its discharge capabilities don't meet the requirements of the device.

Vape Mod or Battery – Which Do I Need?

This terminology can become confusing because the word "battery" is used to describe several different pieces of hardware.

If you're replacing an existing component, the safest approach is usually to identify the exact model you're replacing before shopping for an alternative.

Choosing a Vape Mod

Maximum Power

Check the wattage requirements of the tank and coil you intend to use.

You don't necessarily need the highest-powered mod available. You simply need enough appropriate output for your chosen hardware, ideally with reasonable room for adjustment.

Battery Configuration

Choose between:

• Integrated battery
• Single removable battery
• Multiple removable batteries

Integrated devices are generally simpler to manage. Replaceable battery mods provide more flexibility over the cells being used.

Tank Connection

Many standalone regulated mods use a 510 connection for compatible tanks.

Connection type isn't the only consideration, however. You also need to check that the mod can provide the appropriate power for the tank and coil.

Size

A compact 10W or 20W iStick-style device occupies very different territory from a larger high-powered mod.

Think about the hardware you'll actually attach rather than simply choosing the smallest or most powerful device available.

Choosing a Replacement Vape Battery

If you're replacing a removable cell, start with your device rather than the battery shelf.

Find out exactly what the manufacturer specifies.

1. Battery size
2. Number of cells required
3. Required discharge capability
4. Polarity and installation instructions
5. Whether the batteries need to be used as a matched pair
6. Recommended charging method

Never substitute one lithium-ion cell for another purely because it physically fits.

What Is a 510 Connection?

The 510 connection is a common threaded fitting used between standalone vape mods and compatible tanks.

It allows the tank to screw onto the battery or mod while establishing the electrical connection needed to power the coil.

A number of the mods in our current range use 510 connectivity, while several KangerTech pen batteries support combined eGo/510 connections for older styles of hardware.

Even when two pieces of hardware both use 510 connections, you should still check their electrical and physical compatibility.

What Is an eGo/510 Battery?

Traditional pen-style vape batteries often use an eGo/510 connection.

This type of fitting was widely used across earlier generations of vape pens and clearomisers and can support compatible hardware using either of the relevant thread arrangements.

Several of the current KangerTech batteries within our range use this connection type.

It's particularly relevant if you're replacing the battery for an older EVOD-style vape setup.

Vape Batteries for Beginners

If you're relatively unfamiliar with standalone vape hardware, integrated batteries are generally easier to understand than removable battery systems.

There's no separate cell specification to choose and no need to decide between battery sizes or discharge ratings.

Traditional pen batteries can also be straightforward when paired with the correct compatible tank.

Replaceable-cell mods require a little more knowledge because the battery itself becomes another component that needs to be chosen, inspected, stored and charged correctly.

A complete vape kit may therefore be a simpler starting point if you don't already have a compatible tank.

Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries can store a considerable amount of energy in a very small space, so they need to be handled properly.

For removable vape batteries:

• Use only cells suitable for your device.
• Follow the manufacturer's battery requirements.
• Never use batteries with damaged wraps or visible physical damage.
• Don't carry loose cells in pockets or bags.
• Keep spare batteries in a suitable protective case.
• Keep terminals away from keys, coins and other conductive objects.
• Insert batteries in the correct orientation.
• Use an appropriate battery charger where required.
• Stop using a battery showing signs of damage or abnormal behaviour.

Extra care is required with devices that use multiple batteries.

Where matched batteries are specified, cells should be purchased and used together as an appropriate set rather than mixing batteries with different ages, capacities or usage histories.

Storing Spare Vape Batteries

Removable lithium-ion cells should never simply be thrown into a pocket, backpack or drawer without protection.

Metal objects can bridge the battery terminals and create a short circuit.

A dedicated hard-shell battery case keeps the terminals isolated while making spare cells easier to organise and transport.

That small accessory is particularly worthwhile if you regularly carry spare 18650 or 21700 batteries.

When Should a Vape Battery Be Replaced?

Rechargeable batteries don't last indefinitely.

Over time, lithium-ion cells gradually lose their ability to store the same amount of charge they did when new.

A battery may need replacing if:

• Its runtime has deteriorated substantially.
• It shows physical damage.
• The outer wrap of a removable cell is torn or damaged.
• It behaves abnormally during use or charging.
• The device manufacturer recommends replacement.
• It can no longer hold a useful charge.

A removable cell can usually be replaced independently of the mod. With an integrated battery device, deterioration of the internal battery may eventually mean replacing the complete power unit.
