Hybrid Vape Tanks

Hybrid vape tanks are designed to support both MTL and DTL vaping, giving you a bit more flexibility from one setup. With adjustable airflow and different coil options, they can be used for a tighter draw or a more open inhale depending on how you set them up.

Hybrid Vape Tanks Explained

Hybrid vape tanks are built to handle more than one vaping style. Instead of being limited to just MTL or sub-ohm use, they can be adjusted to suit both, usually by changing the coil and airflow settings.

Most of the time this sits in what’s called RDTL (restricted direct-to-lung), which is basically a middle ground between MTL and DTL. It gives a looser draw than MTL but still more controlled than a full sub-ohm setup.

That flexibility is the main reason people go for this type of tank.

MTL, DTL and Hybrid Vaping

To understand hybrid vape tanks properly, it helps to know the difference between the two main styles.

  • MTL (mouth-to-lung) is a tighter inhale, similar to a cigarette
  • DTL (direct-to-lung) is more open and produces more vapour
  • RDTL sits in between, offering a mix of both

Hybrid tanks are designed to cover that full range, rather than sticking to just one.

How Hybrid Vape Tanks Work

Most hybrid vape tanks rely on two main things to switch between styles:

  • Adjustable airflow to control how tight or open the draw feels
  • Different coil resistances to change how the tank performs

Higher resistance coils with restricted airflow will give you more of an MTL-style vape, while lower resistance coils with open airflow move it closer to DTL.

It’s not always a perfect switch between the two, but it’s enough to noticeably change how the tank feels.

Coil Options and Flexibility

One of the main advantages of hybrid vape tanks is the coil range. A lot of them support multiple coil types, covering both higher and lower resistances.

As a rough idea:

  • 0.8Ω and above leans more towards MTL
  • 0.4Ω to 0.8Ω works for RDTL
  • Below 0.4Ω is closer to DTL

Not every tank covers that full range, but most hybrid tanks will sit somewhere in the middle and give you a few options to work with.

E-Liquid Compatibility

Hybrid vape tanks can be used with different types of e-liquid depending on how they’re set up.

  • MTL setups work better with 50/50 liquids or nic salts
  • More open setups can handle higher VG liquids

That's another reason people go for them, you're not locked into one type of liquid.

Who Hybrid Vape Tanks Are For

Hybrid vape tanks are usually used by people who don’t want to stick to just one style. They’re a good option if you’re still figuring out what you prefer, or if you like switching between setups.

They tend to suit:

  • People moving on from MTL but not ready for full DTL
  • Users who want more control without changing tanks
  • Anyone who wants a more flexible setup

Why People Use Hybrid Vape Tanks

Hybrid vape tanks are mainly about flexibility. Instead of buying separate tanks for different styles, you can adjust one tank to suit how you want to vape.

They’re not as specialised as dedicated MTL or sub-ohm tanks, but they give you a bit of both, which is what most people are after with this type of setup.
