Nic salts, also known as nicotine salts or nicotine salt e-liquid, are one of the two main forms of nicotine commonly found in vape juice. The other is freebase nicotine.
Despite the name, there is nothing grainy or salt-like inside the bottle. The term describes the chemical form of the nicotine.
Traditional freebase e-liquid contains a comparatively high proportion of nicotine in its unprotonated form. With nic salts, an acid is added to the formulation, causing more of the nicotine to become protonated. Benzoic acid is widely used for this purpose, although lactic, levulinic and other organic acids can also be used depending on the formulation.
Why go to that trouble? Primarily because it changes how the liquid feels when inhaled.
At higher nicotine concentrations, freebase nicotine can produce a pronounced throat hit. Protonated nicotine formulations tend to cause less irritation, allowing stronger nicotine e-liquids to feel noticeably smoother. Clinical research comparing salt and freebase formulations has found this difference in irritation alongside differences in nicotine delivery, although the precise result depends on the liquid, device and way it is used.
That combination has made nic salt vape juice particularly popular in compact refillable pod systems.
Nicotine-containing refill bottles sold to consumers in the UK are limited to 10ml per container and a maximum nicotine concentration of 20mg/ml. Regulations also cover child-resistant packaging, tamper evidence, labelling and product notification.
To understand the difference, it helps to look briefly at nicotine chemistry.
Nicotine is naturally an alkaline compound. In conventional freebase e-liquid, more nicotine remains in its unprotonated form. Adding an appropriate acid changes the chemical equilibrium and increases the proportion of protonated nicotine.
In practical terms, lowering the pH of a nicotine formulation can make a high-strength e-liquid less harsh to inhale. This is a major reason why 10mg and 20mg nic salts can work comfortably in small pod systems where an equivalent high-strength freebase liquid may produce a much stronger throat sensation.
The chemistry is more complicated than saying that nicotine is either completely "salt" or completely "freebase". Research analysing commercial e-liquids has found mixtures of protonated and unprotonated nicotine, with the proportions varying substantially between formulations.
So, nic salt is really a useful product category rather than a description of one identical chemical formula used by every manufacturer.
Different acids, nicotine-to-acid ratios, flavour concentrates and base-liquid formulations can all produce slightly different results.
You'll often see nic salts described as providing "faster nicotine absorption". There is some evidence behind that idea, but it deserves a little more explanation than the usual one-line claim.
Controlled studies have found that some nicotine salt formulations can produce higher blood nicotine concentrations than freebase formulations at an equivalent nicotine concentration. One randomised crossover trial comparing 20mg/ml formulations found higher nicotine exposure from the nicotine salt liquid than from the equivalent freebase formulation.
Other studies have similarly found increased nicotine bioavailability with protonated formulations.
It is not simply a case of "salt nicotine always absorbs X times faster", though. The device, coil, aerosol output, nicotine concentration, acid used and the user's puffing behaviour all influence the amount of nicotine ultimately delivered. More recent laboratory work also shows that the underlying chemistry is more complicated than many simplified explanations suggest.
For the customer, the more useful distinction is this: nic salts allow relatively high nicotine strengths to be used with a smoother inhale, which is one reason they pair so naturally with smaller pod devices.
Neither formulation is automatically better. They're different tools, and the right one depends on what you want from your e-liquid.
The biggest practical difference tends to appear at higher strengths.
Someone using 20mg nic salt in a small MTL pod may find the draw substantially smoother than they would with 18mg or 20mg freebase nicotine. On the other hand, a user running a powerful sub-ohm device and inhaling a much larger volume of vapour will ordinarily use a much lower nicotine concentration.
That distinction matters. Nicotine strength cannot sensibly be considered without also looking at how much vapour the device produces.
Finding an appropriate nicotine strength is arguably the most important factor to consider when choosing an e-liquid.
Too little nicotine may leave an existing nicotine user feeling unsatisfied and reaching for the device constantly. Too much can quickly become unpleasant.

If a liquid consistently produces nausea, dizziness, headaches or other signs that your nicotine intake may be too high, stop using it and consider a lower concentration.
For most nic salts, think small coil, moderate vapour and relatively low power.
Refillable pod kits have become the natural home for nicotine salt e-liquid. They're compact, straightforward and generally use smaller coils that produce much less vapour per puff than a high-powered sub-ohm kit.
Many nic salts use a 50VG/50PG formulation. A 50/50 liquid is thin enough to wick efficiently through the smaller inlet holes commonly found on pod and MTL coils while still containing enough VG for a balanced amount of vapour.

MTL stands for mouth-to-lung.
Rather than inhaling the vapour directly into the lungs in one large breath, the vapour is first drawn into the mouth and then inhaled. It uses a tighter airflow and typically creates a smaller amount of vapour.
This style works particularly well with nic salt e-liquid because less liquid is vapourised on each puff.
Most compact refillable pod kits are either dedicated MTL devices or allow the airflow to be adjusted towards an MTL draw.
You'll commonly find nic salts paired with devices from ranges such as Vaporesso XROS and OXVA XLIM for exactly this reason: these types of pods are designed around lower-powered, controlled vapour production.
Technically, compatibility depends on the individual liquid, nicotine strength and device. In practice, high-strength nicotine salts should not normally be paired with a powerful sub-ohm setup.
A sub-ohm coil can vapourise considerably more e-liquid during each inhale. When that liquid contains 20mg/ml nicotine, the resulting nicotine intake can become much greater than intended.
The liquid itself may not be ideal either. A typical 50/50 nic salt is considerably thinner than the high-VG e-liquids commonly designed for large sub-ohm coils.
If you use a more powerful restricted-direct-lung device, a lower nicotine strength may be appropriate, but always consider the device manufacturer's guidance alongside the nicotine concentration.
Nicotine isn't the whole bottle.
Most e-liquids use a base made from vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG), with nicotine and flavourings added to the mixture.
The ratio changes how the liquid behaves.
Because compact pod coils have small wicking channels, a balanced 50/50 formulation is extremely common among nic salts.
High-VG liquids are thicker and are usually designed around larger coils and greater power. That is why simply choosing an e-liquid based on flavour isn't enough; the VG/PG ratio needs to suit the device as well.
