So, you’re looking to get into vaping but don’t know whether to go for freebase or nicotine salts. Both have prominent brands that everyone seems to be using.

Freebase e-liquids from brands such as Vampire Vape have been a staple for many years. Nic salts from ranges like Bar Juice 5000 and ELUX, meanwhile, can be found in vape shops and corner shops across the country.

So, which is best? And does it even matter?

In this article, we will compare these two forms of nicotine e-liquid, looking at everything from throat hit and nicotine delivery to device compatibility, dependence and potential health effects.

What Is Freebase Nicotine?

Freebase is the traditional form of nicotine used in e-liquids. It has been present in refillable vape products since the early days of the industry and remains widely available today.

In chemical terms, nicotine is a weak base. Its form can change depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the liquid around it. In a freebase e-liquid, a larger proportion of the nicotine remains in its unprotonated form.

That unprotonated nicotine is relatively volatile and produces a more noticeable sensation when inhaled. This is one reason freebase e-liquids tend to create a stronger throat hit, particularly as the nicotine concentration increases.

The effect can be useful. Some former smokers prefer a sharp sensation at the back of the throat because it feels closer to smoking a cigarette. Others find the same sensation rough, peppery or irritating.

Freebase nicotine is not necessarily stronger than nicotine salt. The number printed on the bottle still describes the nicotine concentration, usually in milligrams per millilitre. What changes is how the formulation feels and how efficiently a particular device may deliver it.

Common Freebase Nicotine Strengths

  • 3mg: Often used in higher-powered devices that produce a large amount of vapour.
  • 6mg: Suitable for some lower-powered or restricted direct-to-lung setups.
  • 12mg: More commonly used in mouth-to-lung devices.
  • 18mg: A strong freebase concentration generally intended for low-powered mouth-to-lung kits.

These are broad usage patterns rather than fixed rules. Coil resistance, power output, airflow and the amount of liquid vapourised per puff can all change the nicotine dose a person receives.

What Are Nicotine Salts?

Nicotine salt e-liquid begins with freebase nicotine. An organic acid is then added, which transfers a proton to part of the nicotine molecule and produces a more protonated form of nicotine.

Despite the name, nic salts do not contain visible grains of table salt. The term refers to the chemical relationship between nicotine and the added acid.

A laboratory analysis of 23 commercial nicotine salt e-liquids identified several acids being used in these formulations, including:

  • Benzoic acid
  • Lactic acid
  • Levulinic acid
  • Malic acid
  • Tartaric acid
  • Salicylic acid

Benzoic acid is one of the best-known examples, but “nicotine salt” is not one standard recipe. Different manufacturers may use different acids, acid-to-nicotine ratios, flavourings and base-liquid compositions.

Adding acid generally lowers the pH and reduces the proportion of nicotine present in its freebase form. Research into the protonation state of commercial nic salt e-liquids confirms that these products commonly contain nicotine in a predominantly protonated form.

The practical result is a softer, less bitter inhale. This makes concentrations such as 10mg or 20mg easier for many people to use in a compact pod kit.

Why Do Nic Salts Feel Smoother?

The most immediately noticeable difference between the two liquids is usually the throat hit.

Freebase nicotine is alkaline and can feel increasingly harsh as the concentration rises. Nicotine salt formulations reduce that harshness by changing the liquid’s acidity and the proportion of nicotine in its freebase form.

This is more than a marketing claim. In a randomised clinical trial comparing salt and freebase nicotine , participants rated nicotine salt formulations as smoother, sweeter and more appealing. They also rated them as less bitter and less harsh.

That study used equivalent nicotine concentrations, meaning the sensory difference was linked to the formulation rather than simply one liquid containing less nicotine.

However, smoother does not mean weaker. A 20mg nic salt can feel less aggressive than a much lower-strength freebase liquid while still containing considerably more nicotine per millilitre.

Do Nic Salts Deliver Nicotine Faster?

You will often see nic salts described as reaching the bloodstream faster than freebase nicotine. There is some evidence behind the wider claim that nic salts can deliver nicotine more effectively, but “faster” is not always the most accurate way to describe every product.

A 2024 randomised crossover study of nicotine pharmacokinetics compared 20mg freebase, 20mg nicotine salt and 40mg nicotine salt in the same low-powered pod device.

The 20mg nic salt produced a higher peak blood nicotine concentration than the 20mg freebase formulation. The 40mg salt produced the highest peak of the three.

Yet all three reached their peak at a broadly similar time after the final puff. In that particular study, the important difference was therefore the amount of nicotine delivered rather than a dramatically shorter time to the peak.

Another randomised trial examining nicotine delivery among young adult vapers also found that salt-based formulations increased nicotine intake compared with freebase liquids. Participants took more intense puffs when using salts as well.

Several factors may help explain this:

  • Nic salts cause less irritation, allowing deeper or more frequent inhalation.
  • They are commonly sold at higher nicotine concentrations.
  • Modern pod systems can be designed to deliver nicotine efficiently.
  • Users may unconsciously alter their puff length and frequency.
  • The acid and pH of the formulation may affect where nicotine deposits in the respiratory system.

It is therefore safer to say that nic salts can deliver more nicotine under comparable conditions . The speed and total dose will still depend on the exact liquid, device and user.

Nicotine Strength Is Only Part of the Picture

The nicotine number on a bottle tells you the amount present in each millilitre of liquid. It does not tell you exactly how much will enter your bloodstream from a puff.

For example, a 10ml bottle containing 10mg/ml nicotine contains 100mg of nicotine in total:

10ml × 10mg/ml = 100mg of nicotine in the bottle

This does not mean the user absorbs all 100mg. Some nicotine remains in the device, some is lost into the surrounding air and only a proportion of the inhaled nicotine is absorbed.

Actual delivery is affected by:

  • Nicotine form
  • Nicotine concentration
  • Coil resistance
  • Device wattage
  • Puff duration
  • Puff frequency
  • Airflow
  • PG/VG ratio
  • Coil condition
  • User experience and inhalation style

The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities evidence review concluded that nicotine intake from vaping varies considerably according to product characteristics and puffing behaviour. It also found that experienced vapers can achieve nicotine exposure comparable to smoking in some circumstances.

Which Devices Should Be Used with Nic Salts?

Nicotine salts are generally intended for compact, low-powered devices. These include refillable pod kits, prefilled pod systems and traditional mouth-to-lung vape kits.

These devices produce a relatively small amount of aerosol with each puff. A stronger liquid can therefore provide meaningful nicotine delivery without creating an excessive dose all at once.

A 20mg nic salt should not be placed into a powerful sub-ohm device. High-powered coils vapourise much more liquid per puff and could deliver an unpleasant or excessive amount of nicotine.

Freebase e-liquid is more flexible because it is available across a wider variety of nicotine strengths and PG/VG ratios. A 3mg high-VG freebase liquid can suit a powerful kit, while a 12mg or 18mg 50/50 liquid may suit a modest mouth-to-lung setup.

How PG and VG Affect the Comparison

Nicotine form is not the only difference between e-liquids. The ratio of propylene glycol to vegetable glycerine also changes how a liquid feels and performs.

Propylene glycol, or PG, is thinner and carries flavour effectively. It also contributes to throat hit.

Vegetable glycerine, or VG, is thicker and produces denser vapour. Higher-VG liquids usually feel softer but require a coil capable of absorbing the thicker liquid.

Most bottled nic salts use a balanced 50/50 PG/VG ratio because this works efficiently in small pod coils. Many traditional freebase 10ml liquids also use 50/50 blends, while larger low-nicotine freebase bottles are frequently higher in VG.

This means a strong throat hit cannot always be blamed on freebase nicotine alone. A high-PG liquid, certain flavourings, a worn coil or excessive power can also make the vapour feel rough.

Do Nic Salts Taste Different?

Nicotine itself can affect flavour. Freebase nicotine becomes more peppery and bitter at higher concentrations, potentially competing with the intended flavour of the e-liquid.

Nic salts reduce much of that bitterness. Sweet fruit, drink, ice and confectionery flavours can therefore seem more pronounced, particularly at stronger nicotine concentrations.

That does not automatically mean every nic salt tastes better. Taste will still depend on the quality and concentration of the flavourings, sweeteners, cooling agents and base ingredients.

The added acid may also have a subtle sensory effect. As researchers have identified several different acids in commercial nic salts, two products carrying the same nicotine strength may not feel identical.

Are Nic Salts More Addictive Than Freebase?

Both products contain nicotine, and nicotine is addictive. The question is whether the salt formulation can make dependence more likely or more difficult to control.

There are reasonable grounds for concern. Nic salts can:

  • Make high nicotine concentrations easier to inhale
  • Deliver more nicotine than the same-strength freebase liquid in some devices
  • Reduce the harshness that might otherwise cause someone to stop puffing
  • Encourage more frequent or intensive puffing

The clinical research into nicotine form and puffing behaviour found greater nicotine intake and more intense puffing with salt-based liquids than with freebase alternatives.

This does not mean everyone who uses nic salts will consume excessive nicotine. For an adult smoker trying to switch, efficient nicotine delivery may be exactly what prevents a return to cigarettes.

The issue is dose. Someone who needs 20mg to control strong withdrawal symptoms is in a different position from someone using the same strength despite having little previous nicotine dependence.

Can Nic Salts or Freebase E-Liquid Help You Stop Smoking?

Nicotine vaping can help adults stop smoking. A regularly updated Cochrane review of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation found high-certainty evidence that nicotine e-cigarettes help more people stop smoking than traditional nicotine replacement therapy.

However, this does not prove that nic salts are better for quitting than freebase e-liquids. Most smoking-cessation studies examine nicotine vaping as a whole rather than directly comparing long-term quit rates between the two formulations.

Nic salts may be helpful when:

  • Cigarette cravings remain strong after switching
  • Freebase nicotine at an effective strength feels too harsh
  • A small and simple pod kit is preferred
  • The user previously smoked regularly throughout the day

Freebase may be helpful when:

  • A pronounced throat hit helps replace the physical sensation of smoking
  • Lower nicotine strengths are sufficient
  • The user prefers a larger refillable device
  • The aim is to reduce nicotine gradually through a wider range of strengths

The NHS guidance on using e-cigarettes to stop smoking stresses the importance of selecting enough nicotine to manage withdrawal and cravings. Starting too low can lead to constant puffing, poor satisfaction or a return to cigarettes.

Which Is Healthier: Nic Salts or Freebase?

There is currently no convincing long-term human evidence showing that nicotine salts are categorically safer than freebase nicotine, or that freebase is categorically safer than salts.

The strongest established health comparison is between vaping and smoking, not between these two e-liquid formulations.

According to the UK government’s comprehensive review of vaping evidence , vaping exposes users to significantly fewer harmful substances than smoking and poses a small fraction of the short- and medium-term risks.

That does not make vaping harmless. The same report notes that longer-term research is still required, particularly for use lasting more than 12 months.

When comparing nic salts and freebase, the potential risk is influenced by more than the nicotine molecule:

  • The organic acid used in the nic salt
  • The concentration of that acid
  • Flavouring chemicals
  • PG/VG ratio
  • Sweeteners and cooling agents
  • Coil material and condition
  • Power output and temperature
  • The total amount of aerosol inhaled

What Laboratory Studies Tell Us

Laboratory studies can reveal how cells respond to an aerosol under controlled conditions, but they cannot directly tell us whether a person will develop a disease after years of use.

One in-vitro comparison of nicotine salt and freebase aerosols found different biological responses depending on the formulation. Under the conditions tested, nicotine salts produced a stronger inflammatory response, while freebase nicotine was associated with oxidative stress.

The researchers also found that the PG/VG base itself affected cell viability and that the overall response depended on the chemical composition of the e-liquid.

These results are worth taking seriously, but they do not establish that one nicotine form causes more human illness. Cell cultures receive carefully measured laboratory exposures and do not reproduce the full complexity of lungs, metabolism, immune responses and real-world puffing behaviour.

Do the Acids in Nic Salts Create Additional Chemicals?

Organic acids can alter aerosol chemistry. The effect is not identical across every acid or device.

Research measuring free radicals from different nicotine salt acids found that the type and concentration of acid affected the number of radicals generated in the aerosol.

Benzoic acid has received particular attention because it is widely used in nic salt formulations. A laboratory study examining nicotine benzoate and benzene emissions found increased benzene under the specific liquid and device combinations it tested.

That should not be interpreted as proof that every benzoic acid nic salt exposes users to the same amount of benzene. Heat, wattage, solvent composition and device design can completely change the result.

Earlier research into benzene formation in electronic cigarettes also found that emissions rose under certain high-powered conditions. This is another reason to use e-liquid only in an appropriate device and avoid pushing a coil beyond its intended operating range.

Could Low-Powered Nic Salts Produce Fewer Heat-Related Chemicals?

There is a plausible argument that a low-powered nic salt setup may require less aerosol and less electrical power to provide the same nicotine satisfaction as a high-powered, low-strength freebase setup.

Lower power and reduced liquid consumption could, in theory, limit exposure to some chemicals created when PG, VG and flavourings are heated.

However, this has not been proven as an overall health advantage. Nic salts introduce organic acids, may increase nicotine exposure and may encourage more frequent use. A lower-powered device can also produce unwanted chemicals if the coil is old, poorly supplied with liquid or operated incorrectly.

The sensible conclusion is that device power matters, but it does not make nicotine salts automatically safer.

Cardiovascular Effects

Nicotine can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure regardless of whether it is supplied as a salt or freebase liquid.

A formulation that delivers more nicotine may produce a stronger acute effect. However, current research does not provide enough long-term evidence to say that one nicotine form creates a greater risk of heart disease than the other.

The UK evidence review found that the overall cardiovascular risk of vaping remains uncertain, while still being expected to be considerably lower than the risk from smoking.

Anyone with cardiovascular disease, pregnancy-related concerns or a medical condition affected by nicotine should seek individual advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Signs That Your Nicotine Strength May Be Too High

Too much nicotine can feel unpleasant whether it comes from a salt or freebase liquid. Common warning signs include:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Light-headedness
  • Sweating
  • Shakiness
  • Hiccups
  • Stomach discomfort
  • A racing or pounding heartbeat
  • Difficulty sleeping

Stop using the product if you feel unwell. Persistent, severe or worrying symptoms should be assessed by a medical professional.

Nic salt users need to be particularly aware of these signs because the smooth inhale may not provide the same early warning as a harsh freebase liquid.

Are Nic Salts Stronger Than Freebase?

Not automatically. Strength is measured by nicotine concentration.

A 10mg nic salt and a 10mg freebase liquid both contain 10mg of nicotine per millilitre. The salt may feel smoother and, in some setups, deliver more nicotine into the bloodstream, but the bottle does not physically contain more nicotine.

Confusion usually arises because nic salts are commonly sold at stronger concentrations than the freebase liquids used in modern high-powered devices.

For example, comparing a 20mg nic salt with a 3mg freebase liquid is not a direct comparison between nicotine forms. One contains over six times as much nicotine per millilitre.

UK Nicotine Limits

Nicotine-containing e-liquids sold as ordinary consumer products in the UK are restricted to a maximum nicotine strength of 20mg/ml.

The current UK regulations for consumer e-cigarettes also restrict nicotine refill bottles to 10ml and tanks, cartridges and prefilled pods to a maximum liquid capacity of 2ml.

This 20mg limit applies to both nicotine salts and freebase nicotine. Products claiming to contain 30mg, 40mg or 50mg nicotine are not compliant ordinary consumer e-liquids for the UK market.

Who Should Choose Nic Salts?

Nic salts are likely to suit someone who:

  • Has recently stopped smoking and still experiences strong cravings
  • Finds stronger freebase liquids too harsh
  • Uses a compact pod kit
  • Prefers discreet vapour production
  • Wants nicotine satisfaction from a relatively small number of puffs
  • Previously smoked regularly throughout the day

A high strength should not be chosen simply because it is available. Someone who only requires 5mg or 10mg may feel unwell or become more dependent when unnecessarily using 20mg.

Who Should Choose Freebase E-Liquid?

Freebase is likely to suit someone who:

  • Prefers a noticeable throat hit
  • Uses lower nicotine strengths
  • Uses a high-powered or direct-to-lung device
  • Wants a broader choice of PG/VG ratios
  • Enjoys larger vapour production
  • Wants to reduce nicotine gradually through several strength options

Freebase also remains a perfectly reasonable choice for a mouth-to-lung device. Nic salts have not replaced it; they simply provide another way to formulate nicotine.

Can You Mix Nic Salts and Freebase E-Liquid?

Nicotine salt and freebase e-liquids can physically be mixed, provided both liquids are intended for the same type of device and use compatible PG/VG ratios.

Mixing them changes the final nicotine concentration, flavour and proportion of protonated nicotine. The result will not necessarily perform like either original liquid.

For example, combining equal amounts of a 20mg nic salt and a nicotine-free liquid would produce approximately 10mg/ml nicotine, assuming the volumes are measured accurately.

Mixing is not a good way to make an unsuitable liquid safe for a high-powered device. A diluted salt may still be too strong depending on the final concentration and the amount of vapour the device produces.

Common Nic Salt and Freebase Myths

“Nic salts contain more harmful table salt”

They do not contain table salt. The word “salt” describes the protonated chemical form created when nicotine is combined with an acid.

“Freebase nicotine is always stronger”

Freebase often feels stronger in the throat, but that does not mean it contains or delivers more nicotine.

“Nic salts always enter the bloodstream instantly”

Nic salts can improve nicotine delivery, but the speed and size of the nicotine peak depend on the formulation, device and user. Clinical studies do not support treating every salt product as identical.

“Nic salts are harmless because they are smoother”

Smoothness is a sensory property. It does not prove that the aerosol is harmless or that the nicotine dose is low.

“Freebase is healthier because it contains no acid”

There is no long-term human evidence proving that freebase e-liquid is categorically healthier. Freebase products still contain heated solvents, nicotine and flavourings, and their emissions depend heavily on the device.

“Nic salts are only for beginners”

Nic salts are often useful during the switch from smoking, but they can also suit established vapers who prefer compact low-powered kits. Device compatibility and nicotine requirements matter more than experience level.

Nic Salts vs Freebase: Which Is Best?

Neither is universally best.

Freebase e-liquid provides a firmer throat hit, a wider range of base-liquid ratios and better compatibility with high-powered devices at lower nicotine concentrations. It remains a strong option for people who enjoy the physical sensation of smoking or want more control over vapour production.

Nic salts make stronger nicotine concentrations considerably smoother. In a low-powered pod kit, they can provide effective craving relief without requiring a large amount of vapour. That can be especially useful for an adult moving away from cigarettes.

The same smoothness is also the main reason to pay attention to strength. Nic salts can be easier to overuse because they do not always feel as strong as the nicotine concentration suggests.

For most people, the decision comes down to three questions:

  • How much nicotine do you genuinely need?
  • What type of device are you using?
  • Do you prefer a noticeable throat hit or a smoother inhale?

If you use a compact mouth-to-lung pod kit and need stronger nicotine without excessive harshness, nic salts are likely to be the better fit.

If you use a higher-powered kit, prefer a stronger throat sensation or only require a low nicotine concentration, freebase e-liquid will usually make more sense.

Whichever type you choose, use a strength that controls cigarette cravings without causing signs of excessive nicotine intake. For smokers, the greatest health benefit comes from switching away from cigarettes completely rather than continuing to smoke and vape together.
