When Matt (my boss) handed me the new Caliburn G4 Pro to have a look at, my first impression was “oh great, another touchscreen vape”. I was fully expecting this to be a gimmick that wouldn't add any meaningful benefit.
Maybe I was too quick to judge…
Unboxing the Caliburn G4 Pro was a pretty standard experience as far as vape kit packaging goes. You just slide out the inner container and inside you'll find the kit itself, two of the new Caliburn GPP pods and a user manual. Sadly no Type-C cable, which is required to charge the thing.
This device looks modern and has a nice high-gloss finish that really shines; an effect that is really pronounced on the kit I’ve been using (Desert Gold). My only issue with this finish is that it attracts fingerprints like a magnet. The Caliburn G4 Pro kits feature a unique design on the back of each different colour variant, adding an additional visual flair to the device, and I like how each one is different.
Handling the Caliburn G4 Pro, you can tell straight away that this is a high quality kit. Its metal construction and glass screen make it feel like an iPhone or other high-end smartphone, and the kit also feels hefty despite its size which adds a reassuring weight to it.
I started off vaping with the 0.4 ohm pod included with this kit. For the purposes of this test I used Ultimate Nerd Salts e-liquid. Filling the new GPP pod up was very straightforward, similar to using a Vaporesso Xros pod. They feature a pretty innovative anti-leak system where you push down with the nozzle which opens a gate, allowing liquid to flow.
By default the wattage is set to 35W when vaping with the 0.4 ohm pod, but this can be tweaked through a simple scroll menu.
My first impressions while vaping were great, the flavour came through super strong and the vapour was thick, though I did end up tweaking the wattage and power settings to my preference. By tapping the power mode text, I was able to adjust the power curve of the Caliburn G4 Pro.
The power curve is a nifty little feature that lets you change how the power is delivered throughout the whole puff. For example you can choose to have more or less power during the beginning, middle and end of each draw.
As I mentioned before, I already had a bias against the touchscreen feature. To me it seemed like it could be another poorly thought-out gimmick. This really wasn’t the case, and thankfully UWELL took time to develop a touchscreen system that is packed full of useful and unique features.
Most of the menus can be found by scrolling down on the ‘home screen’ of the Caliburn G4 Pro. This will let you access settings like screen brightness, animation and language. It will also let you access features such as the battery saver mode, which slightly reduces the power delivery and brightness but increases your uptime with the already large 1800mAh battery.
Another cool feature you can access is the ‘clean UI’ option that clears the home screen of power settings, letting you fully appreciate your chosen theme, and adding accent text to the bottom of the screen. You can customise this bottom text to your liking (within a character limit) using the in-built keyboard. As you can probably imagine, the keyboard is tiny, but it is accurate and once you get used to it, typing on it isn’t so bad.
Now, these features on their own are already enough in my opinion, but the Caliburn G4 Pro has another card up its sleeve…
You can unlock new themes by reaching puff counts of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000. I think this is a pretty clever feature that I’ve never seen done before. There is a sad story to this though, as I tried hard to unlock the first theme to show you all in this review. However I accidentally reset the puff counter.... yikes.
Overall the Caliburn G4 Pro is a kit I would recommend to anyone who wants something a bit more advanced, and something that looks and feels high quality. For someone like me who is used to the simplicity of my Vaporesso Xros Cube, it was a much-needed upgrade that has overall improved my experience of vaping.
