It is less than two months since the ban on single-use vapes came into effect across the UK and it may be argued that it is too soon to be sure about the longer-term effects of the move. Nonetheless, for many people who had been reliant on using disposables, this is a time they were dreading.
Among the reasons the consequences will not be clear yet is that some people have stocked up on disposables by snaffling whatever bargains they could get in clearance sales. You may be one of them. But, however much stockpiling you do, there will come a time, perhaps very soon, when you will run out.
Among those fretting about what would happen after the ban came in was Cara Hallinan, a 25-year-old vaper who had successfully quit smoking by using vapes, but had always relied on single-use devices. Although she was one of those stocking up before the ban, she told the BBC she wasn't happy about the choices on offer in the refillable vapes market.
She lamented: “With everything else going on in my life, what if I forget to charge my vape? And then I wake up one morning without a vape, or I run out of charge at work?”
Cara's complaints may be echoed by many people and you might be nodding along with every word. Yes, you can learn to use refillables, but can you cover all bases to ensure you are not caught short in a way that disposables once allowed you to avoid?
This is where getting a vape subscription may just come to the rescue, helping organise your vape supplies so that no matter how busy your life may be or how often routines are disrupted, you can stay on top of your vape provision far more easily.
Our new subscription service works very simply: You choose what products you want to receive regularly, including e-liquids, coils and pre-filled kits, and set up a standing order.
This means you will get your chosen supplies delivered to your door at a time that works for you, with these being sent regularly as clockwork. Whatever else is going on and no matter whether you have noticed you are running low or have forgotten all about it, the next delivery to keep you stocked up is never far off.
Of course, you still have control of everything: you can amend your delivery any time if you want to try something different, or cancel at any time if you want.
Could this be the solution to the woes of people like Cara, adding a bit of order and organisation to help ensure she is much less likely to get stuck without a vape?
It won't just be former users of disposable vapes who are relieved. Health campaigners may also be pleased because it could reduce the chances of vapers reverting to smoking, having used disposable vapes to help them quit.
Before the ban took effect, UK Vaping Industry Association director general John Dunne warned that there was a high risk of many vapers resuming smoking, while others would seek disposable vapes on the black market.
He warned: “One study has estimated that some one million vapers could return to smoking as a result of the ban, which would be a public health disaster.”
Some might think such a development would prompt ministers to rethink the disposable vape ban, but that could be far too optimistic, even from a government gaining a reputation for U-turns.
The reason for this is that Britain is not the only country to have banned disposable vapes and other countries did it sooner. A major reason for doing so in multiple countries has been to try to reduce access to vapes for underage users.
In Australia, disposables were banned a year ago and research has shown that the number of illegal vapers aged 14-17 has dropped significantly, from 17.5 per cent of this age group to 14 per cent. Health minister Mark Butler said the fall was a direct consequence of the ban.
This is the sort of outcome the British ban is intended to bring about as well, so this data will encourage those who campaigned for it.
Some may argue that vapers just have to get used to the change, in the same way smokers have had to deal with a succession of restrictions in places where they can light up.
However, we don't think vapers who used to rely on disposables should just put up with more challenging circumstances as they try to negotiate the world of refills and charging up. That is why our subscription service was launched. When you need things to be more organised, we have set up a way you can do exactly that.
