What Is Vape Juice?
Vape juice is the main term given to nicotine-infused, flavoured liquids that you use to fill up a vape kit or vape tank. Vape juice is also commonly referred to as e-liquid and vape liquid. When you’re using your vape kit, e-liquid is absorbed into the coil and then heated up and turned into vapour which you can then inhale, delivering nicotine into your body to help with your cravings.
What are eliquids Made From?
Most vape juice has four ingredients: Vegetable Glycerin (VG), Propylene Glycol (PG), flavourings and nicotine. All of these combined make up vape juice, however not all vape juices contain nicotine. Vape liquids do not contain tobacco, so there is no tar or many of the other nasty elements that you get from cigarettes. Thanks to the TPD, vape juice ingredients are heavily scrutinised and must meet the safety standards set out by the MHRA before they can legally be sold in the UK.
What Are TPD Vape Juices?
By law, any bottle of vape juice that contains nicotine can only be sold in a maximum bottle size of 10ml, with a maximum nicotine strength of 20mg (2%). The Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) regulations are in place to ensure that all e-liquids are as safe as possible for the public to buy and use. The TPD governs all aspects of eliquid products including the ingredients, labelling and quality.
Are Freebase and Nic Salt Vape Juices Different?
Yes, they are two different types of vape juice. The differences are mainly between the type of “throat hit” you get from them, and how the nicotine is absorbed into the body. With a freebase eliquid, you’re likely to experience a stronger throat hit and a reduction in cravings for a longer period, however, freebase e-liquids may take a little longer for your body to absorb. On the other hand, nic salt vape juice will give you a softer throat hit which means you can use a higher nicotine strength without as much harshness on the throat. Another difference between the two is that nic salts usually absorb into the body faster, giving you a more instant craving relief but the effects can wear off faster.
What Are Shortfill E-Liquids?
Shortfills contain no nicotine and are designed for you to add your own. The reason for this is because many sub-ohm vape kits go through eliquid a lot faster than a standard pod kit, and having one bigger bottle of vape juice is much easier to manage than having to carry around multiple 10ml bottles. Shortfills usually come in two bottle sizes, 60ml and 120ml. The volume of liquid in these is less than what the bottle can take and that’s because the manufacturers leave room for you to then add your nicotine shots. As an example, if you buy a 60ml shortfill it contains 50ml of liquid, to which you add a 18mg 10ml nicotine shot, giving you a total e-liquid volume of 60ml and a nicotine strength of 3mg. The same applies for the 120ml shortfill, but with these you will only get 100ml of liquid, so you’d need to add two 10ml nicotine shots to get the 120ml volume and 3mg strength.
What Nicotine Strength Is Right For Me?
This is an important question, but sadly there is no ‘right’ nicotine strength as it isn’t going to be the same for everyone, and will depend on you and what your cravings are like. A good starting point is to first look at how many cigarettes you smoke (or used to smoke) and then use our guidelines below as an example and start from there. At first you may need to try a couple of different strengths before you find one that works for you. If you go for a weaker strength, this may not be enough to satisfy your cravings, however if you go too high, you could get a slight headache or make you feel a bit dizzy. If this is the case, you need to lower your nicotine strength. This type of dizzy sensation is what’s known as a ‘nicotine rush’.
Recommended Strength Based On Number Of Cigarettes Per Day
| Average Daily Cigarettes | Recommended E-Liquid Strengths |
| 1 - 5 cigarettes | 3 - 6mg |
| 5 - 10 cigarettes | 6 - 12mg |
| 10 - 20 cigarettes | 12 - 20mg |
If you are using a sub-ohm style vape kit, we recommend using no more than a 6mg e-liquid. Sub-ohm kits produce much more vapour and a bigger hit, meaning that you can use a much lower strength of vape juice to get a similar result, as the power of the kit compensates for the reduced nicotine. With sub-ohm devices, it’s always better to start low and use the power settings and airflow of the device to adjust your hit rather than going for a higher nicotine strength.
